Voices: Destination Wanderlust with Damaris Lewis

We asked model, dancer, entrepreneur, and Prince's last muse Damaris Lewis, her favorite travel destination. Find out what place she describes as wanderlust and her 5 go-to travel products!

What's your favorite travel destination?

Through my many travels around the country, the place that has captivated my attention by far is hands down New Mexico. Specifically, White Sands National Monument.

What sets this place apart from NYC and other places you've traveled to?

I’m born and raised in NYC. A proud Brooklynite at that. New Mexico couldn’t be more different than the place I call my hometown. It’s as if when you touch down you’re transported into this magical world you never knew existed. Every single time. The architecture there that the Universe has made goes beyond words. It’s a great place to reset.

What is one word you'd use to describe this place and why?

Divine. There’s no other way to describe it. It’s nickname is “The Land of Enchantment” and I couldn’t agree more. There’s a free feeling when you’re there, especially when you’re driving because of its high elevation that you will always remember.

What do you like to do there?

When I’m in New Mexico I love to drive down to White Sands National Monument. It’s a completely white desert made of granite rock. Hands down the most gorgeous site my eyes have ever witnessed. Standing in White Sands reminds you of how small you are on this earth and how much beauty surrounds you that wasn’t made by man.

Describe the first time you visited. Was it different than what you expected?

The first time I visited New Mexico I went for the Hot Air Balloon festival in Albuquerque. It was more than I expected. To be on the grounds every morning as the balloons took flight was such a site to see. I highly recommend it.

It’s important to get out of your comfort zone. Go explore. Be who you truly are in lands where you may not know anyone. You can leave the expectations at home and just be. The definition of wanderlust.
